General Checklist
- Have a functioning operating system
- Went with Arch + Plasma because I am most familiar with that combination. Gentoo's default packages are a few versions behind Arch/AUR packages, if they even exist. Personally I did not notice any benefits of compiling packages locally on my hardware, which might have been a configuration issue. At the end of the day I don't believe that troubleshooting the whole compilation process to improve performance would save me more time than simply sticking to pre-compiled packages, and Arch's broader and newer offer of packages overall dispels any doubts about the correct path forward.
- As for Hyprland (or other TWMs) vs Plasma: While WMs are slimmer and more minimalist, they lack the working-out-of-the-box character of complete desktop package groups as their components often are in a rather experimental state depending on further development and/or manual user configuration, the documentation for which is often scattered across multiple places, and is made more complicated still when running them on very manual, minimal, and experimental distros like Arch or Gentoo. They look beautiful when customised right, but right customisation is not an easy task.
- Pursuing that path takes time and dedication, and its destination might be worth the hardship for some in certain circumstances, yet I feel compelled to pursue different goals for the time being, namely the cleaning and hardening of already existing architecture to have the essentials out of the way before I conduct further experiments.
- Have it fully customised
- Feeling like home in one's working environment enables swift and focused action, and thus a good time while performing tasks. Settle in.
